I have the privilege of being at the 46th Annual Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in Washington DC this week. We are halfway through and the learning opportunities have been immense.
It has been fascinating to see what happens when thousands of mental health practitioners come together to learn and network.
There has been joy, honesty, awareness, and connection.
Here are a few take-aways from the first few days:
When offering support to a grieving person, offer it often and with no expectations. For example, "I'm thinking of you. When you are ready, I'd love to see you for coffee, a visit, or dinner - whatever is best for you."
- inspired by David Kessler
"Don't use top-down approaches (i.e. rewards and punishment) for body-up challenges (instinctual responses that don't involve thought, but are body responses)"
- Mona Delahooke
"What would happen if you listened to that part of you, rather than fighting with it?"
- inspired by Dick Schwartz
"It is important, especially early in our grief, that our stories be witnessed "
- David Kessler
"What if we treated our home as our most important organization?"
- Eve Rodsky
"We are all the Harriet Tubmans of our world."
- Sabrina N'Diaye
Which do you find most inspiring?
